The Body as Temple: God Has Always Been Moving Closer
Both the Bible and Gnosticism agree that something divine is inside you. But they say completely opposite things about what that means.
Gnosticism says: your spirit is a prisoner trapped in flesh. The body is the cell. The goal is to get the spirit OUT. Matter is evil. Escape is salvation.
The Bible says: your body is the temple. Not the prison. The temple. God chose to move IN. On purpose. "Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (Greek: πνεῦμα, pneuma, “breath, wind, spirit”), who is in you?" (1 Corinthians 6:19). A temple isn't a cage. It's a home. God isn't trapped in your body. He moved in because he wanted to live there.
The Trajectory: Always Closer
Look at the pattern. God has always been moving closer, not further away:
- In Eden: he walked in the garden. Nearby.
- In the wilderness: he lived in the tabernacle. In the camp.
- In Jerusalem: he dwelt in the temple. In the city.
- In Jesus: the Word (Greek: λόγος, logos, “something said, a word”) became flesh (Greek: σάρξ, sarx, “flesh, the body”). In a body.
- After Pentecost: the Spirit lives in believers. In you.
The trajectory is not outward. It's inward. Each step, God moves closer. From the garden, to the camp, to the city, to a single body, to YOUR body. He's not trying to escape matter. He keeps diving deeper into it.
The Gnostic god wants out. The biblical God wants in.
When God had the choice of where to put his presence permanently, he didn't choose a mountain. He didn't choose a golden building. He didn't choose a floating dimension of pure light. He chose your body. Made of carbon. Made of dust. Made of the dirt he called "very good."
The body isn't the mark of the beast. It's the address God chose for himself.
